A new app — connect now

Families may have noticed that their Holland Hall app has updated. If yours has not, you can visit Apple App Store, Google Play or Amazon Appstore, search for the app and click “update.”

Parents will want to click the ‘Parents’ tab at the top of the home page to access the Parent Portal, Schoology, a quick directory of school numbers, the Family Directory and more. To use the Family Directory, you will need to sign into the Parent Portal, but your phone's password manager should save your password for future use.

Please do not create an account at this time. One is not needed to use the app as it is. Group applications — allowing parents in a grade level to talk to each other and receive messages from the grade coordinator — will roll out soon.

First grade families: You'll be the first to start using the app's group feature. Other grades will soon follow. Be watching for more information soon!

Traffic note — the zipper merge is a real thing!

We are aware that 81st Street eastbound between Yale Avenue and the entrances to Holland Hall can get very busy at the start and end of the school day, and the transition from two lanes to one can be challenging.

This new school year, we would like to suggest that our students and families use zipper merge when traffic is heavy. In a zipper merge situation, cars take up the available space in both lanes until shortly before the road narrows. Then, cars take turns moving forward — one from the left, one from the right. That should help more cars fit along 81st Street and should make for a more peaceful entry to campus.

Here is a 90-second video about zipper merge and why it can be helpful.

Volunteer in the Dutch Zone and get a discount!

We need volunteers in the Dutch Zone most weeks of the month and during home football games. If you're interested in volunteering — and getting a 20 percent discount during your shift — sign up here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1v86W39KTQIrGBvhCSzE5LTBNgoD0PeVT_-cTU6LieEk/edit?usp=sharing.

Opportunity to help Dutch Exchange!

Has Dutch Exchange helped you out? Do you have an hour to help out Dutch Exchange? Dutch Exchange needs help sorting and hanging all the gently used uniforms and Dutch Wear that has come in since school started. Come give back any Wednesday morning from 9-11. We will be there and would love our help. Would you like to help but don't have time Wednesday morning? Please reach out to Ashley Parrish, aparrish@hollandhall.org, to organize another time to help that works with your schedule. Thanks!

The Dutch Exchange is open to all Holland Hall families and students any time the Tandy Dining and Wellness Center is open. Take what you need, and if you have donations, there is a yellow bin in the hallway leading to the Communication Office next door.

Notes from the Nurse

With the recent rise in respiratory and other illnesses, we want to remind the Holland Hall community to keep your child (or yourself) home if you are ill. Please also consider having them tested for COVID-19, especially if there is a known exposure and/or recent travel.

Please also allow them to stay home until they are well. Students should be fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medications for at least 24 hours before returning. The same applies for vomiting and/or diarrhea.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to one of your school nurses.

Back to School Night set for Sept. 7

Back to School Night is coming up very soon. We have adjusted the format this year after receiving your feedback on the survey sent last fall. We know that many of you value most being able to see your children’s classrooms, getting a feel for their schedules, and meeting their teachers — so Back to School Night will be an Open House format for you to do those things.

In order for you to learn a little bit about your child’s teachers, each teacher will have posted a slide to their Schoology page by September 1st in a Back to School Night Folder on their class Materials page. We hope you will take time with your child to view each page and read through each slide and class information before you attend Back to School Night.

This evening is not a time for individual meetings with teachers, it is more of a meet-and-greet while you tour the spaces and live the schedule your child has each day. If you need to communicate specifically with a teacher, an email or a scheduled meeting would be advised.

We hope that you will all join us on September 7 from 5:45-7:30 p.m. for this parents-only event. We will begin in The Tandy Dining Hall for a quick meeting at 5:45 p.m., you will then visit your child's Advisory room briefly, and the remainder of the time will be Open House concluding by 7:30 p.m.

8th Grade Family Picnic is next week

Calling ALL 8th graders and their families to the first home varsity football game on Sept. 8 for a social before the game. Please bring your own picnic.
