Dutch Weekly April 6 - 12

Traffic changes — please take note

Beginning next week, the gates at the new security arms will be down during off-peak hours at the main gate and the new Self Family Welcome Center. All gates will be open during drop-off and pick-up, as always.

When you enter campus at any other time:

  1. Enter either lane — visitor or the right lane — and if you have a Holland Hall sticker, a member of our safety team will open the gate immediately. If you — or a grandparent, etc., don't have a sticker, the safety officer will greet you before opening the gate.
  2. After being admitted to campus, please check in at the branch or building you're visiting. You will also check out at the same desk.
  3. Please use extreme caution going entering and exiting campus, especially as people get used to the new Welcome Center and gates.
  4. The gates will lower between each car. Please do not tailgate!
  5. Please be careful turning left from the main gate to go onto the north road heading toward the Primary School. There are two lanes, and one car may be going straight.
  6. The speed limit everywhere on campus is 14 mph for the safety of the students, who are often walking outside of the buildings. The school is monitoring the need for additional speed bumps at the Welcome Center.
  7. An automated system for parents and staff is in the works, so stay tuned!

No classes on Friday, April 12

Please mark your calendars. Friday, April 12, is an All Faculty Professional Day.

What to know about the solar eclipse on Monday

As we prepare for the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8, the safety and well-being of our students remain our priority. While our location will not experience complete totality, it is important for us to be prepared and ensure the safety of all students during this event.

Each branch and grade levels within Primary and Middle School have made specific plans for the afternoon of April 8. For the most part, regular schedules of classes will be in place with short planned eclipse observation times supervised by faculty though any regular recess times will be moved indoors.  Holland Hall has purchased protective eyewear for each student. Students will be instructed to wear those glasses when outside between 12:30-3 p.m. if they plan to look up toward the sun/eclipse.

Grade level plans are as follows:

  • EPK, PreK, and JK will not be outdoors and will not be viewing the eclipse.
  • K-5th grade students will remain indoors for regular recess and will be closely supervised by faculty if/when they go outdoors that afternoon. These students will have an opportunity to view the eclipse, with adequate supervision and guidance.
  • 6th-12th grade students will move from class to class in the afternoon, some of these transitions will be outdoors. These students will be outdoors for supervised eclipse viewing between 1:30-2:00.

If you would like for your child to experience the entire afternoon of the eclipse, we suggest you keep your child home with you to do so. Likewise, as we execute our plans, if you feel that your child will be challenged to follow safety precautions, it might be wise to keep him/her home as well. We do appreciate you supporting us by reminding your child to follow all instructions given!

If you would like your child to attend school but not participate in the planned eclipse viewing, please communicate with Kindi Walker (kwalker@hollandhall.org) for Primary School, Kelly Danner (kdanner@hollandhall.org) for Middle School, and Jenna Alford (jalford@hollandhall.org) for Upper School. Students opting out will gather indoors to watch the eclipse via live stream, ensuring that all students can safely participate in the educational experience of the solar eclipse. Please note that MS and US will travel outside as needed to attend regular classes.
