American Exchange Project seeking host families

The American Exchange Project, America’s first free domestic exchange program, is looking for host families from Holland Hall to join us as we connect the country.

Through AEP, seniors embark on an all-expenses-paid, week-long trip to an American community very different from their hometown after graduating from high school, where they get immersed in area culture and history, live with a local family, and make friends for life.  AEP students also welcome visiting students within their own hometown during another week of the summer. This is AEP’s first year in Tulsa; the program is coordinated locally by Leonardo De Andrade, Chair of Holland Hall’s World Languages Department and Spanish teacher in the Upper School.

AEP seeks Holland Hall families who can host one or more visiting students in their homes from Wednesday, July 24 to Wednesday, July 31. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for visiting students to experience day-to-day life in Tulsa and for families to meet someone from another part of the United States. Responsibilities include transporting the student(s) to and from the airport and providing two square meals a day; hosts will receive a stipend to help offset food, transportation, and other costs. Interested families should sign up through the AEP website.

If you have any questions, please visit AEP’s host family FAQs webpage or reach out to Mr. De Andrade at ldeandrade@hollandhall.org. AEP is not a Holland Hall-sponsored program.

FROM THE NURSE

Winter illness numbers are up

Unfortunately, the number of cases of respiratory illness is up, as is usual this time of year.  Flu, RSV, COVID, and other illnesses are high, but are expected to follow similar patterns as 2022.

Per Emergency departments across the US, most respiratory visits are flu-related, but COVID is the biggest cause of severe illness (hospitalization, etc.)  and RSV rates seem to be declining.  At Holland Hall, we are currently seeing an increase in the number of Flu cases reported to the health office.  Please take this into consideration if your child isn’t feeling well, when deciding if your child should stay home.  We recommend you contact your child’s physician for guidance.

As always, the best line of defense is hand-washing, staying up-to-date on immunizations, avoiding those who are ill, wearing a mask (if you feel appropriate), and staying home when you are sick.  Also, please seek emergency medical care if you or your child experiences any difficulty breathing.
